Trimming your lawn gives it a nice manicured look. A trimmer is used in places a mower can't get to such as around trees, along fence lines and along paths and garden beds. There are several types of trimmers/edgers on the market. These include petrol powered and electric models. A trimmer performs a horizontal cut using a fast rotaing nylon cord to cut the grass. They range in price from $80 for an electric model to over $500 for a good petrol brushcutter. An edger is different to a trimmer in that it does a vertical cut for defining edges along driveways etc. Often people will turn their trimmer on its side and use it like an edger. Trimmers come with either a straight shaft or a curved shaft. The curved shaft models, or whipper snippers, are used specifically for trimming fairly short grass along edges. The straight shaft models, or brush cutters, are more robust. They can usually take a metal blade attachment and can be used for clearing thick weeds and longer grasses. Always wear face, eye and ear protection when trimming your lawn as flying debree can cause serious injury.
