Only 150 years ago, most of the Byron Shire was covered in dense sub-tropical rainforest. This forest was called The Big Scrub and was the largest continuous tract of Sub-tropical Rainforest in Australia. The Big Scrub was logged for Cedar in the late 1800's and cleared for dairy farming in the early 1900's. Most of the dairy farming ceased in the 1970's and now beef cattle and macadamia plantations are the main primary industries. Only a few small remnants of the Big Scrub Rainforest still exist. By replanting the Big Scrub rainforest, promoting sustainable agriculture and growing your own fruit and vegetables, you can make your land a lot more productive and help restore some of the Big Srcub Rainforest. To find out which trees are native to the area, checkout our Big Scrub Rainforest Plant List. ---------- Big Scrub Garden Care offer a range of services to the Byron Shire including lawn mowing, garden maintenance, vegetable gardens, rainforest restoration, landscpaing and land management plans.
