| Fertilising a Lawn |
|
Fertilising your lawn not only makes it look greener, it also protects it against disease, patchiness, moss and weeds. Spring is the best time to fertilise your lawn. Use a balanced lawn food that is high in nitrogen for green healthy leaves aswell as phosphorus and potassium to promote strong root growth and disease resistance. An N:P:K ratio of around 10:4:8 is ideal. Many people fertilise with a fertiliser high in nitrogen in Sping to encourage growth and in Autumn, a fertiliser high in potassium is used to toughen the grass for winter. Fertilisers come in many forms including organic, such as dynamic lifer or blood and bone, slow release granular ferilisers such as osmocote and liquid fertilisers such as weed n feed. Organic fertilisers are better for the environment, however they do have a strong odour that can last a few days. After you fertilise your lawn, always water it in. The best time to fertilise is after rainfall so the ground is already moist and can absorb more nutrients. Never over fertilise your lawn with fertilisers high in nitrogen. Excess nitrogen will cause the soil to become acidic and have a detrimental effect on earthworms and soil microbes.
